Kia has unveiled the EV5 SUV concept. This is what will spawn the all-electric EV5 SUV. This will be the third EV in Kia’s line-up. The car follows up closely on the recent launch of the EV9 SUV.
Kia EV5: What’s new?
While the company is calling it as the Concept EV5, this is going to be launched in China sometime this year. Kia is keeping the technical details of the car under wraps. Hence the reason it was unveiled at Kia’s Chinese EV Day event.
We can however expect the car to be based on the modular E-GMP platform. The same platform underpins the existing Kia EVs while four more are expected to be based on this by 2026.
Size and dimension wise, the EV5 is similar to the Kia Sportage. This means it will rival the likes of Toyota bZ4X, Volkswagen ID4 and Nissan Ariya. Hence, Kia could offer similar power and performance numbers as th competition. There could be a choice of both two and four-wheel drive configurations as well as multiple battery options.
If the carmaker borrows the 77 kWh battery from the EV6, the EV5 could offer a range of up to 482 km on a single charge.
Kia EV5 Design & Interiors
The EV5 gets a sharp design while being focused on practically. It gets some nice bits like the swivelling seats from the EV9 along with rear hinged doors as well. This means the car lacks a B-pillar and would offer occupants the choice to rotate their seats 90-degrees to enjoy the outside views.
On the inside, the EV5 Concept comes with a bench front seat and flat flooring thanks to the absence of a transmission tunnel. Other features include a large panoramic sunroof, sustainably sourced materials and large wrap-around display screen on the dash.
Kia’s EV plans in India
As of now, Kia only sells the EV6 here in India. Surprisingly, the car has met with a good response and Kia could introduce other EVs in the market as well.
