Kia has officially revealed the Clavis, its upcoming premium MPV, through a teaser video. According to Kia, this is not an MPV but an RV or Recreational Vehicle. The Clavis, set to debut on May 8, 2025, will not replace the Carens but will be positioned as a higher-end alternative with a more modern design and advanced features.
Design and features
The teaser showcases the Clavis navigating through a dense forest, highlighting its collision avoidance system, which is part of its Level 2 ADAS suite. The MPV features L-shaped LED DRLs, three-pod LED headlights, and a redesigned grille, giving it a more aggressive stance.
The panoramic sunroof is another standout feature, adding a premium touch to the cabin. The Clavis is expected to come with dual 10.25-inch screens, ventilated seats, and a 360-degree camera, making it one of the most tech-loaded MPVs in its segment.
Powertrain options
Kia is expected to offer the Clavis with the same engines as the Carens, including:
- 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol โ 113 bhp, 144 Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual.
- 1.5L turbo-petrol โ 158 bhp, 253 Nm, available with iMT and 7-speed DCT.
- 1.5L diesel โ 115 bhp, 250 Nm, offered with manual and automatic transmissions.
Market position and rivals
The Clavis will compete with premium MPVs like the Hyundai Alcazar, Maruti XL6, and Toyota Innova Hycross. Kia is expected to price it above the Carens, which currently ranges from INR 10.60 lakh to INR 19.70 lakh (ex-showroom).
Our thoughts
The Kia Carens has been a fairly successful car in its segment. Kia probably wants to build on that success and offer a premium MPV. In short, buyers looking for a more premium version of the Carens with added features can go for the Clavis.
