Jeep Wrangler 4xe Plug-In Hybrid SUV revealed

Written by Nizam Shaikh

FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) unveiled the brand’s first electrified powertrains in the form of a new plug-in hybrid engine available on the new Jeep Renegade 4xe and the Jeep Compass 4xe in the European market. Jeep has now revealed the New Jeep Wrangler 4xe that strengthens the brand’s Global Electric Vehicle Lineup.

The entry of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe (pronounced 4 by E) marks the arrival of the most capable, technically advanced and eco-friendly Wrangler ever. The brand has announced that the Wrangler 4xe will be available in Europe, China and the United States by early 2021. The brand has already introduced the Jeep Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe models in Europe.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine with an engine-mounted motor-generator unit along with a transmission-mounted motor-generator unit, powered by a 400-volt, 17-kWh, 96-cell lithium-ion, nickel manganese cobalt battery pack producing a total output of 375 Hp of power and 637 Nm of torque matched to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

Two clutches work to manage power and torque from the e-motor and engine. When this clutch is open, the Wrangler 4xe is capable of up to 25 miles (40 km) of nearly silent, zero-emission, electric-only propulsion. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe returns an estimated fuel economy of 50 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) (21 Kmpl). The Wrangler 4xe is capable of 4×4 capabilities with instant torque on demand and is the first Jeep to feature automatic full-time four-wheel-drive system, first 4:1 transfer case and first electronic front sway-bar disconnect system. The Hybrid powertrain vehicle also comes with three operation modes, known as E Selec – Hybrid, Electric and eSave.

The Wrangler 4xe hybrid system includes an Integrated Dual Charging Module (ICDM), which combines a battery charger and a DC/DC converter in a single unit that is more compact than two separate components, and a next-generation Power Inverter Module (PIM) that is reduced in size.

While Jeep has not announced the arrival of the Wrangler 4xe for the Indian market, the plug-in hybrid SUV is not likely to arrive in India before 2021.
