Hyundai’s vision for IONIQ 5 robotaxi

Written by Rohit Tonapi

Hyundai Motors shares its vision for the IONIQ 5-based robotaxi through a new global campaign. The company partnered with Motional to develop the IONIQ 5-based robotaxi. Together, they equipped the vehicle with advanced autonomous driving technology. Hyundai calls the new campaign ‘Innovation Begins, from Very Human Things’.

Hyundai and Motional plan to begin transporting public passengers in the IONIQ 5 robotaxi in 2023. The first city to experience it will be Las Vegas. Furthermore, Hyundai and Motional will then expand to other major cities in the US and globally.

What Is The IONIQ 5 Robotaxi?

Hyundai first unveiled the IONIQ 5 robotaxi at the 2021 IAA Mobility. The vehicle is an all-electric, SAE Level 4 autonomous vehicle that can operate without a driver. Hyundai partnered up with Motional to make the robotaxi a reality. The companies equipped the IONIQ 5 with an array of hardware and software. This new equipment provides safe and secure driverless operations.

The robotaxi aligns with Hyundai’s vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’. Hyundai’s aim for the robotaxi is to go fully autonomous while retaining a humanistic touch. Furthermore, this narrative is depicted through two videos of the recently launched campaign.

The New ‘Innovation Begins, From Very Human Things’ Campaign

The company released two new videos which depict the company’s vision for the IONIQ 5 robotaxi. The videos emphasise the humanistic qualities of the robotaxis. They also show how they adopt safe driving behaviours and care for their passengers.

The first episode shows a female engineer working in an autonomous lab for the IONIQ 5 robotaxi. She gets inspiration from her childhood memories of her father always driving carefully and considerately. She then applies his driving qualities when working on safety technologies for the Level 4 autonomous vehicle. Later in the video, using these driving qualities, the car stops for a cyclist and also pulls over for emergency vehicles. The car also safely makes a left turn after yielding to oncoming traffic.

The second episode shows a robot engineer-inspired teen taking a ride in the IONIQ 5 robotaxi with her friends after school. They are surprised and also delighted to see the car driving by itself. One of her friends unbuckles his seatbelt, and the car quickly alerts him to buckle up, much as a parent would. The video also highlights how the self-driving robotaxi represents a mobility solution for anyone.
