Hyundai IONIQ 5 – Highlights

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 derives its name from a fusion of “ion” and “unique”. The model was announced as a long-term research and development project focusing on sustainable mobility. The IONIQ 5 features innovative exterior and interior design through the newly developed platform. In addition to this, the interiors also feature eco-friendly materials at multiple touchpoints.

The platform facilitates many body types and also features a modular battery system. Hence, it ensures it is suitable for a wide range of applications. Currently, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 also shares its platform with the Kia EV6.

The IONIQ 5 features a low centre of gravity for better handling characteristics. The 8-point battery mounting system and use of Ultra High Strength Steel also ensure the safety of the vehicle and battery pack. In the interiors front, the flat floor and flexible seating layout offer additional interior space. The sliding console and 2nd-row seats also increase the interior’s flexibility.

Hyundai says the performance and handling capabilities of the E-GMP platform will usher into a new age of fun-to-drive battery electric vehicles. The company also adds that the large capacity and the electric powertrain also help achieve a top speed of 260 kmph.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 – Powertrain

The Hyundai Ionic 5 is based on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) architecture and also offers 800V ultra-fast charging capabilities. In the international market, the Ioniq 5 comes with a 58 kWh and also a 72.6 kWh battery pack option. The electric car comes with a 167 HP power and 350 Nm torque electric motor, which is likely to offer a range of around 502 km on a single charge (WLTP). It is likely that the IONIQ 5 in India will come only with the 58 kWh battery option and the entry-level powertrain.
