Hyundai’s sunroof success reflects India’s premium aspirations

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has achieved a major milestone by selling more than 1.1 million sunroof-equipped vehicles in India over the past five years. This achievement highlights the growing demand among Indian buyers for premium features that were once reserved for luxury segments.

In FY 2024–25, 52% of Hyundai’s domestic sales included sunroofs, and the figure rose to 54% in the first half of 2025.

Democratizing premium features across segments

Hyundai currently offers sunroofs in 12 out of its 14 models, ranging from hatchbacks to premium SUVs. The company has played a pioneering role in making sunroofs a mainstream feature, especially in compact and mid-size segments.

To further improve accessibility, Hyundai has localized the production of panoramic sunroofs, reducing costs and expanding availability across its lineup.

Customer-Centric innovation

According to Mr. Tarun Garg, Whole-Time Director and COO of HMIL, this milestone reflects the modern Indian customer’s aspiration for premium experiences in everyday mobility. Hyundai’s strategy has focused on blending global technologies with local preferences, ensuring that features like sunroofs are not just aspirational but attainable.

The company plans to continue aligning its product offerings with evolving definitions of value, comfort, and lifestyle, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.

Our thoughts

This is Hyundai reading the room—and reading it well. I mean, who doesn’t love cracking open a sunroof on a breezy evening drive? Personally, I think it’s brilliant how Hyundai turned a luxury feature into a mass-market must-have. From the Exter to the Tucson, they’ve made sure there’s a sunroof for every budget and every mood.
