Hyundai Creta rival from Maruti Suzuki could be called ‘Vitara’

Written by Rohit Tonapi

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota’s new mid-size SUV launch is just around the corner. All this while, it was believed that the Creta rival will use Toyota’s TNGA-B platform. However, there is new information regarding this. According to the latest reports, Suzuki’s Global-C platform will underpin the new Creta-rivalling SUV. Toyota will be the one manufacturing the SUV for both brands, but the platform will be Suzuki’s.

Maruti Suzuki Could Name It The ‘Vitara’

In addition to this, dealer sources are also suggesting it will be a global model. Hence, the company will export it to other markets. This could also include the European market. In Europe, Suzuki’s Vitara is nearing the end of its lifecycle. Hence, the new SUV could serve as a replacement for the Vitara. Suzuki first introduced the current Vitara in 2015 in the European market. Furthermore, it uses the same powertrain combination – the K15C engine and strong hybrid technology.

In India, Maruti Suzuki will not use the Vitara moniker in its upcoming Brezza model. Thus, it also clears the name for future use. Maruti Suzuki has used past brand names in India before, like with the Baleno. And since the new SUV will use the Global-C platform, the brand will likely choose to go with the Vitara name.

All the reports hint that the Maruti Suzuki’s new SUV could be called the Vitara. However, the company officials have been tight-lipped about it. For now, we do know that Toyota will name its version of the SUV the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Toyota will unveil the new SUV on 1st July 2022.

Suzuki’s Global-C Platform

Currently, Suzuki’s Global-C platform underpins the Ciaz, S-Cross and the Vitara Brezza. Additionally, other cars to use this platform also include the 4th-gen Vitara, which is available internationally, and the new S-Cross. Maruti Suzuki and Toyota using the Global-C platform is a new development. All the previous reports hinted that the SUV will use Toyota’s TNGA-B platform.

However, we do know what engines will power the upcoming SUV. Both the brands will use Suzuki’s Dual-Jet K15C series engine. This engine is the next iteration of the K15B currently available in the Ertiga and XL6. As per previous reports, the SUV will be available in a mild and strong hybrid option. The hybrid tech will come from Toyota. However, sources say Suzuki was responsible for integrating the hybrid technology into its K-series engine.
