Honda doubles down on Hybrids with localised SUVs and City e:HEV successor
Honda Cars India is gearing up for a major hybrid push, with a new lineup of SUVs and sedans built on a modular PF2 platform. This marks a strategic shift from its earlier hybrid efforts, which began with the City e:HEV—a tech showcase that struggled with pricing due to imported components.
The new PF2 platform is hybrid-ready, highly localised, and designed to support multiple powertrains, including ICE, hybrid, and EV. This will allow Honda to offer cost-effective hybrid models tailored to Indian buyers, while also exporting them to global markets.
What’s coming? : SUVs, Sedans, and More
Honda’s hybrid roadmap includes:
- A three-row hybrid SUV positioned above the Elevate, expected to launch in 2027.
- The sixth-generation City, arriving in 2028, with both NA petrol and strong hybrid options.
- A sub-4m SUV based on the same platform, likely powered by the Elevate’s 1.5L petrol engine.
These models will compete in the INR 15– INR 30 lakh bracket, where demand for hybrids is expected to grow due to tightening CAFE norms and rising fuel costs.
Why the shift? Lessons from the Honda City e:HEV
The current City e:HEV delivers an impressive 26.5 km/l, but its INR 20.85 lakh price tag limited its appeal. The new PF2-based models aim to fix that by:
- Localising components to reduce costs
- Offering more body styles, including SUVs
- Balancing performance, efficiency, and affordability
This aligns with Honda’s global strategy to scale hybrid offerings amid a slowdown in EV adoption.
