Honda plans to co-develop EVs with General Motors

Honda and General Motors will strengthen their partnership soon. The two car manufacturers will develop a series of electric cars in the coming future. The brands are aiming at the affordable EV segment. Earlier, the partnership let Honda use General Motors’ EV platform on two of their upcoming electric SUVs. 

Honda and General Motors – New Partnership Details

According to the new deal, Honda and General Motors will develop a new series of EVs. The new series of EVs will utilize the American company’s next-generation Ultium battery technology. Both the manufacturers have high sales ambitions, and the partnership will enable the production of millions of EVs globally. Honda and General Motors will discuss future collaboration possibilities to improve EV battery technology. However, both the companies remain tight-lipped about the financial terms of their partnership.

Honda and General Motors – New EV Lineup

The new lineup of EVs will come with a price tag below USD 30,000. The Japanese and the American manufacturer states that the new series of affordable EVs will include compact crossovers and more. The new EVs won’t be coming anytime soon and are expected to arrive from 2027 onwards. The two manufacturers are also working on lowering the cost of electrification and improving the performance.

Honda India will be unveiling the City Hybrid on 14th April 2022 in India. The City Hybrid will continue to use the 1.5-litre 4-cylinder DOHC, Atkinson Cycle i-VTEC engine and will work alongside two electric motors. One of the two electric will power the front wheels while the other will act as an Integrated Starter Generator System (ISG). The second electric motor provides additional assistance to the engine to reduce load and improve fuel efficiency. The two electric motors and the engine produce a total of 108 PS of power and 253 NM of torque. The dual electric motors also let the new City e:HEV run on electric-only mode for short distances.
