Honda discontinues Amaze diesel variants in India

Written by Kanad Kalasur

Looks like Honda has formally discontinued the Amaze diesel from India. The diesel version of the sedan has been delisted from the company’s official website. The Amaze was one of the last models to offer the diesel engine amongst its peers, which included the likes of Tata Tigor, Maruti Dzire and  Hyundai Aura. The compact sedan segment no longer offers a diesel option in India anymore.

Emission Norms to blame for discontinuation

The new emission norms, dubbed as the Real Driving Emissions (RDE), will come into force from April 2023. These are even more stringent than the already tougher BS6 norms. Manufacturers are finding it expensive to upgrade the diesel engines to these norms. Especially in the case of budget offerings like the Honda Amaze.

This means, Honda will now have only two models on sale with a diesel engine. These would be the WR-V and the Honda City. Noteworthy fact is that both of these don’t have a diesel automatic option which the Amaze diesel was offering. Honda’s diesel journey also began with the Amaze when the first-generation Amaze was the first Honda to come with a diesel engine.

Amaze will continue, but in a all-petrol avatar

The Honda Amaze was facelifted back in August 2021. It is currently offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that puts out 90 HP and 110 Nm. It is paired with a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic gearbox. It is offered in E, S and VX trims. The price starts from INR 6.89 lakh and goes all the way upto INR 9.48 lakh.

Honda Amaze 5-lakh sales milestone

onda Amaze had breached the 5 lakh units mark. The car, presently in its second generation version, is a prime choice in India’s entry sedan segment. This is further asserted by the fact that Amaze is presently the largest-selling model for HCIL. The sedan accounts for more than 40 per cent of company sales. Being an India-centric product, the Made in India Amaze from Honda’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan is also a much-loved product in the overseas market.
