Harley-Davidson Touring bikes recalled for brake light problem

Written by Kanad Kalasur

Harley-Davidson has issued a recall for 199,419 units of 2019-2022 Trike, CVO Trike and 2022 Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles. It is said that the brake light could malfunction in affected motorcycles. Just a few days back, Harley-Davidson had also recalled the Nightster cruiser.

Details on the Brake Light Problem

Harley-Davidson has reported that in some cases, the brake lights of the affected bikes could stay activated despite the rider not using the brakes. This can unintentionally provoke the vehicles following the affected vehicle to brake, increasing the risk of a crash. The fault could be due to a software issue that determines when the rear brake lights on these bikes are illuminated.

Harley-Davidson has shared the VINs of the affected motorcycles on its website as well as on the NHTSA website. 31,572 Trike and CVO Trikes have been affected which have been produced between 6 July 2018 and 23 June 2022. Further, 1,67,847 units of 2022 Touring and CVO Touring bikes manufactured between 2 July 2019 and 23 June 2022 have been affected as well.

The American bike manufacturer has reaffirmed owners of bikes produced after 24 June ,2022 to not have this issue. These new bikes use a new pressure switch and a software calibration is said to fix this.

How are the bikes being rectified?

Harley-Davidson has asked its dealers to notify the owners of the affected bikes. They are also sending letters to owners incase they miss the notification from the dealers. Owners of the affected motorcycles should schedule a service with local dealer who will do a software update on the Touring and CVO Touring at free of cost. In case of Trikes and CVO Trikes, along with the software, a new pressure switch will be installed as well.

Owners can also contact the Harley-Davidson customer service, or the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration’s (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more details.
