In a recent move against the illegally parked vehicles, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ruled out the RTO authorities from seizing the vehicles that have been parked at the same spot for over 8 days. The seized vehicles are then to be scrapped.

With an aim to clear the narrow and beautiful streets of Goa from illegally parked vehicles, the authorities have already begun to send notices and seize vehicles. In fact, 250 vehicles have already been seized and are in the custody for scrapping by Panaji authorities.

However, the seizure procedure does not include a direct action, but owners are being sent proper notices to move their vehicles to a designated parking spot. If not done, the authorities then further seize the vehicle and send it for scrapping. The CM also added that owners will not be able to redeem their vehicles once seized.

Additionally, to control the illegally growing car rental mafia in Goa, the CM has ordered to track the privately registered vehicles that are being used as unregistered car rentals. The authorities have also seized 550 private vehicles until now, which were being used as car rentals with private registrations. The authorities have also proceeded with the cancellation of the licenses of the respective owners.

Our verdict

The new vehicle parking law in Goa is the right step towards the growing issue of illegal car rentals as well as illegally parked vehicles. Various entities, like the car workshops, often tend to leave the scrap cars on the roadside, which further causes traffic congestion. Issues like these are likely to get resolved with the new law.
