Gazoo Racing to make Toyota’s upcoming engines?

As per the latest report published online, Toyota will start receiving critical inputs for its future engines from the GR wing. The GR wing is renowned for creating race-spec engines and models that are winners in various motorsport events globally.

Toyota confirmed to be developing the new range of four-cylinder turbo-petrol engines which are likely to power the future sportscars as well the mass market vehicles globally.

While the reason behind it is unclear as of now, we believe this decision will benefit future Toyota buyers. It is because of the GR’s engineering prowess, that the new four-cylinder engines will use a very different and efficient design.

As per Toyota’s Europe’s Chief, Matt Harrison, the company is currently working on two engine platforms, a 1.5-litre and a 2.0-litre. Both of these engines will use smaller pistons to save space for the designers to play around the engine bay.

Not long ago, there was a rumour that GR has already created a 400 bhp engine based on the upcoming four-cylinder platform. In fact, this engine was recently teased as being fitted in a Yaris GR at a motorsport event.

In 2024, Toyota made a joint venture with Mazda and Subaru to make ICE, EV, and Hybrid powertrains for various models. The ICE range is believed to be completely owned by Toyota for this pact.

Our verdict

The main benefit of GR making engines for Toyota will be the use of race tech in upcoming mass market cars. This will considerably improve the performance and efficiency of future Toyota cars. Nevertheless, the new four-cylinder platform will land on Indian shores in the coming years only.
