Ford has filed a patent for a new Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) in India. This move has sparked speculation about Ford’s plans for the Indian market, and whether this new MPV will indeed be launched.

A New Ford Design for a New Market

The patent image reveals a straightforward yet elegant design for Ford’s upcoming MPV. The vehicle sports sleek headlights, a prominent Ford grille, and a sculpted bumper. A notable feature is the vast panoramic sunroof, paired with a shark fin antenna, enhancing its profile. The side view presents a lengthy silhouette with subtle shoulder lines and body cladding.

This MPV is a fresh design, not seen in any of Ford’s international markets, indicating a strong focus on the preferences and needs of the Indian consumer. The vehicle is likely to be a product designed with a focus on the Indian market.

Key Features and Competitiveness

The MPV has functional roof rails, a panoramic sunroof, and a shark fin antenna. Part of the wraparound tail lamps can be seen in the design patent. The rear overhang is sizable, which should allow ample boot space for a wide variety of luggage items.

Launch and Pricing Speculations

The launch of the new MPV is speculated to occur sometime in FY 2025-26. With a possible pricing range of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, Ford might be able to establish a strong presence in the competitive Indian auto industry with its planned debut.

With the new government norms kicking in for foreign car manufacturers, Ford could think of a re-entry in India. The “Make In India” strategy has worked for the Volkswagen group with the Virtus-Slavia and Taigun-Kushaq. Ford might be aiming for something similar. It will be good to see a revived Ford EcoSport along side a new MPV being manufactured in India while other models like the Everest are brought in as CBUs.
