Force Gurkha to join Indian Defence Forces

In a latest bid, Force Motors won the supplying order for 2,978 units of Gurkha GS soft-top 4X4 800 kg model to the Indian Army and Indian Air Force.

This order was placed by the Directorate General of Capability Development (CD-13/14), General Staff Branch, IHQ of the MoD (Army), New Delhi.

As per the procurement order details, Force Motors will be supplying the tailor-made Gurkha units to the Indian Defence Forces over a maximum span of 3 years.

This procurement has turned out to be a huge feat for the Pune-based auto manufacturer as the Gurkha has been an astonishing 4X4 SUV that has been selected over other rivals for the Defence Forces.

However, further details about the special units that will be supplied, have not been revealed. But, as per the official statement from Force Motors, Gurkha units will be tailored for the diverse needs of the Indian Defence Forces.

Mind you, the Gurkha moniker has been on sale for long in the passenger segment. It is a trusted weapon of choice for the off-roading enthusiasts who like to explore the extreme overlanding in India.

Gurkha’s capable turbo-diesel engine, sourced from Mercedes-Benz, and the 4X4 capabilities are cumulatively best-suited for the Indian Defence Forces.

Our verdict

While the Gurkha has not been a huge commercial success since its launch, its addition to the Indian Defence Forces is going to be a turn-around from being a crude and rough off-road SUV into a respected vehicle of choice by the Armed Forces.
