Written by Nizam Shaikh

The Volkswagen Passat sedan has been spotted testing sans camouflage on the outskirts of Pune indicating that the brand is preparing to re-introduce the model soon in the Indian market. The new Volkswagen Passat will be introduced in the new facelift form and is speculated to come with the 2.0-litre TSI BS6 emission-compliant turbocharged petrol engine.

Since the test mule was undisguised the spy picture shows that the facelift model will get mildly refreshed exteriors such as a reworked front apron with a new sleeker grille and sharper headlamp units that blend with the new grille with the chrome bits continuing onto the top portions of the headlamp units. The lower part of the bumper also features new jet-intake inspired design on the front and a revised muscular one on the rear. The boot lid also now comes with a ‘Passat’ badging below the large VW logo.

On the inside, the facelift Volkswagen Passat is likely to retain the wraparound dashboard layout but is offered with a new flatbottomed control mounted steering wheel, horizontal lines on the air-con vents, silver and piano black trim on the dashboard fascia and the infotainment system speaking of which the facelift model is speculated to come with the latest-generation unit with e-SIM based connected technologies along with wireless Apple CarPlay integration. The facelift model is also being speculated to feature remote unlock feature using a Samsung smartphone.

Powering the new Volkswagen Passat will be the same BS6 compliant motor that powers the Tiguan Allspace which is a 2.0-litre TSI (Turbocharged Stratified Injection) four-cylinder petrol motor that produces 190 ps of power and 320 Nm of torque matched to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

The Volkswagen Passat with the new powerful 2.0-litre TSI engine is likely to be priced around the INR 35 lakh mark and is expected to be launched by the end of 2020 or early 2021.
