Electric vehicles will get green number plates, free parking & toll exemption

Written by Parichay Malvankar

As of now, electric vehicles still do not have enough traction in the Indian automobile market. Neither electric cars or electric two-wheelers are selling in decent numbers, and that has more to do with the lack on infrastructure to support such green mobility. While the government has set a timeline of 2030 to move from fossil fuel powered cars to all electric in India, a few steps are currently being taken to provide small but significant boosts.

A new report online suggests that electric vehicles could sport green coloured number plates in India. This will help in identification that a particular vehicle runs using battery power and not burning fuel. This proposal has been brought forward by the Niti Aayog.

It is also being proposed that electric vehicles should be provided toll exemption & free parking for 3 years since date of sale, and also, 10% parking space should be available for electric vehicles in residential, commercial & office premises.

However, all this is not really a significant monetary boost directly compared to the high cost of purchase of electric vehicles, and the long charging time coupled with unavailability of charging stations.

Does this sound like a good enough move if you were to plan a electric vehicle purchase in the near future?
