Continental manufacturing TPMS for cars in India

Written by Parichay Malvankar

Continental has announced that they will begin mass manufacturing of Tire Pressure Monitoring System in India. Continental will become the 1st brand to manufacture these units in India and aims to make this feature more mainstream. TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) will keep drivers / riders informed about the accurate / current tyre pressure, temperature & motion and ensure a safer ride.

Continental is looking at expanding the production of their TPMS units from their Bangalore plant. The brand will steadily increase production in the next 3 years and for now is the only tier-1 supplier responsible for this manufacturing in India. Down the line, Continental will also export these TPMS units from India.

The TPMS unit will measure the tyre pressure, tyre temperature and will detect the tyre motion from inside the tyre. This information will be transmitted via radio frequency and will be displayed in the instrument cluster. The drivers will also be informed about this in real time, to take necessary action, if needed. This TPMS unit will not only be critical for safety, but also for efficiency. The TPMS unit has a life of nearly 10 years and can be operated in a temperature range of -40 to 120°C and it weighs only 37 grams.

Also, with relevant information easily available, owners will be able to increase their tyre life. With optimum rolling resistnance which would result in lower fuel consumption, which as a result could also extended the range on EVs, TPMS is quite a good feature to have. TPMS can also help in detecting a air leak sooner, and can help avoid in getting stranded in the middle of the road.

TPMS is currently seen on quite a few passenger cars priced in the 10 – 15 lakh rupee price range. Some high end motorcycles also have this feature, keeping the rider informed at all times. While some might think that this feature is not necessary, owners making the best use of this, would vouch for how useful it is.
