Jeep has taken the wraps off the Jeep CJ Surge Concept. This is an all-electric SUV that is retro-styled and will make its debut at the SEMA show in the USA this week.
What is the Jeep CJ Surge concept?
The Jeep CJ Surge is a heavily modified version of the CJ-7. Finished in a Copper Canyon orange paint shade, the SUV is striking to look at. It also gets blue detailing in a few places hinting at the electric powertrain of the SUV. The CJ Surge Concept rides on 18-inch wheels paired with 35-inch BF Goodrich off-road tyres. The already lifted suspension can further be raised by two more inches thanks to a lift kit. Accessories like a winch, underbody protection, and LED fog lamps have been sourced from the Performance Parts Division of Jeep. This will help the car tackle any terrain. At the back, there is a roll cage fitted.
The all-electric bits could be based on the recently revealed Jeep Avenger 4×4 concept. The interiors get a Houndstooth fabric accent on the seats, bespoke steering wheels and a gauge cluster showing the driver the battery’s remaining charge.
Powertrain of the Jeep CJ Surge concept
Conceptualised and built by Mopar, the Jeep CJ Surge gets a 266 HP electric powertrain along with a 50 kWh battery placed in the rear of the SUV. Power is sent to all four wheels via a two-speed automatic gearbox. In sheer numbers, this car puts out as much as a stock V6 engine from the Jeep Wrangler.
Will Jeep CJ Surge see the light of day?
While this CJ Surge is based on the Jeep’s CJ-7 SUV, the heavily resto-modded concept is a one-off concept just for the SEMA Show. It is not yet clear if Jeep plans to use this as a means to promote its new electric powertrain. That said, owners of older Jeeps might be interested in swapping out the petrol underpinnings of their cars for an electric powertrain. Jaguar offers a similar factory mod for owners of the E-Type Zero. The E-type Zero is a factory-restored 1968 Series 1.5 Jaguar E-type Roadster with an electric powertrain. There has yet to be a word if Jeep will make this EV swap available to existing owners.
