Byd had recently announced the launch of its eMPV named e6 for the Indian market. The vehicle will cater to the B2B segment, thus closing the gap between ICE and EVs. This Warren Buffet backed EV maker is already making names in the ever-evolving electric mobility segment. Powering the e6 is a Byd’s revolutionary Blade battery. And now, the company has confirmed that they will outsource its Blade Battery to other leading OEMs globally. This is a great move to propel the electrification shift in the Indian automotive industry.
What Makes Blade Battery So Special?
Blade battery is one of the most robust and reliable in the competition. Byd mentioned that it is the only battery to have passed the nail penetration test. This method is one of the most rigorous ways to test the thermal runaway of batteries. As part of this test, the Blade battery did not emit any smoke or fire. After being penetrated, its surface temperature only reached 30 to 60°C. When compared to other batteries on the test, a ternary lithium battery exceeded 500°C with a violent burn.
Meanwhile, a conventional lithium iron phosphate block battery does not openly emit flames or smoke. But, its surface temperature reached dangerous temperatures of 200 to 400°C. This pretty much proves Blade Batteries are safer when compared to their counterparts. Alongside this, Blade Battery also passed other extreme test conditions. This included being crushed, bent, being heated in a furnace to 300°C and overcharged by 260%. And Byd confirmed that neither of these tests resulted in a fire or explosion.
To further assert its quality, Blade Battery completed an extreme strength test that saw a 46-tonne truck driving right over it. Byd also mentioned that the space utilisation of the Blade Battery pack increases by over 50%, compared with that of conventional lithium iron phosphate block batteries. This results in significant improvements in energy efficiency and range. Another key area where Byd completely shines is solving the range issue. The company claims that Blade Battery can also support fast charging, which is a limitation to traditional lithium iron phosphate batteries.
