BMW has unveiled its latest addition to the “CS or Competition Sport” line-up of track-focused cars – the M4 CS. The new M4 CS is lighter, faster, and more track-focused than the standard M4.
Power and Performance
The new BMW M4 CS packs an upgraded version of the M4’s twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six engine that featured in the limited-run CSL. The peak power has been upped by 20 hp from 530 hp. The M4 CS makes a staggering 550 hp of power. This increase in power is achieved by raising the turbo boost pressure from 1.7 bar to 2.1 bar.
Although the CS does not produce any more torque than the Competition, it sustains its 650 Nm peak for an additional 220 rpm at the top end of the rev range, holding it from 2,750 rpm to 5,950 rpm. The powertrain has also been reworked to endure long sessions on the track.
Weight and Speed
The M4 CS is also 20kg lighter than the standard model. This weight reduction, coupled with the extra performance from the engine, allows the CS to cut the 0-100 kmph sprint time from 3.5 sec in the Competition coupé to 3.4 sec. Its 80-120 kmph time is rated at 2.6s ec in fourth gear and 3.3 sec in fifth.
The CS’s chassis has been tuned to improve steering precision and wheel control. It features stiffer springs and anti-roll bars that are also said to reduce roll through tight bends. The stability control system has also been reprogrammed to raise the limit at which it intervenes to correct a slide.
The product of all these changes is a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 7 min 21.99 sec, nearly 6.8 sec quicker than the M3 CS and just 3.9 sec behind the more hardcore M4 CSL.
In terms of visual difference, the M4 CS gets yellow-tinted daytime running lights. The grille gets a red outline like the M3 CS. The colours, Riviera Blue and Frozen Isle of Man Green have been carried over from the M4.
While we have the M4 on sale in India, it is not yet clear if BMW plans to bring the M4 CS as well.
