BMW reveals iX1 electric SUV with 313 HP

Written by Rohit Tonapi

The all-new 2023 BMW X1 made its debut recently. While the US gets a single engine option, Europe gets a ton of them. This includes the new all-electric iX1. Compared to the X1, the model gets subtle style tweaks, but it’s what is under it that’s entirely different. The 2023 iX1 will be the first all-wheel-drive EV from BMW in the premium compact segment.

BMW claims that the iX1’s global warming potential is 30 per cent lower than the new X1 sDrive19i. Additionally, using renewable power for charging, its global warming potential over a lifetime is 60 per cent lower. BMW has not announced prices but said the 2023 X1 will be available across Europe from October. Additionally, new iX1 buyers will get free access for 12 months to the IONITY charging network across Europe.

2023 BMW iX1 Electric SUV – Highlights

The iX1 gets a host of changes to distinguish itself from the combustion-powered X1. Up front, the new iX1 gets blue-coloured air intake shrouds. The kidney grille also gets blue accents around it. Furthermore, the sides and the rear of the SUV get additional blue coloured accents to make the iX1 easily distinguishable.

The iX1 will come in a single guise – xDrive30. The model gets two electric motors and produces a total of 313 HP and 494 Nm of torque. The power and torque on offer let the iX1 go from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.7 seconds. At the same time, the top speed is 180 kmph.

Powering the motors is a floor-mounted 64.7 kWh battery pack. BMW claims a combined electric consumption of between 17.3 to 18.4 kWh per 100 km. Thus, the resulting range for the model is between 413 km and 438 km. The battery pack in the iX1 also supports DC fast-charging. The maximum rate that it supports is 130 kW. This means the iX1 can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just under 30 minutes. Going by these charging times, one can also add 120 km of range in 10 minutes. Also on offer is single- or three-phase AC charging. The standard rate is 11 kW, but one can increase it to 22 kW.

Other Powertrain Options

In Europe, apart from the iX1, the X1 will get many powertrain options. The range starts with the X1 sDrive18i, which uses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine making 136 HP and 230 Nm of torque. The next in line is the xDrive23i which also gets a 48V mild-hybrid technology. This model produces 204 HP and 320 Nm of torque.

As oil burners go, BMW will offer two options – xDrive18d and xDrive23d. Both the models use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine. The xDrive18d produces 150 HP and 360 Nm. At the same time, the xDrive23d also features a mild-hybrid technology and makes 197 HP and 400 Nm of torque.

Starting from November 2022, there will also be two petrol hybrids on offer – xDrive25e and xDrive30e. Both the models use a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine and a plug-in hybrid system. The total output for the xDrive25e is 245 HP and 477 Nm. Meanwhile, the xDrive30e produces a total of 326 HP and 477 Nm of torque.
