BMW recalls IX luxury car over faulty cruise control

Written by Kanad Kalasur

BMW has issued a recall for the all-electric iX. According to reports, some drivers were accidently able to turn on the cruise control when operating the vehicle at low speeds. Hence the recall.

Details of the BMW iX recall

This issue was first reported in 2022. BMW received complaints from owners in regards to unintentional acceleration. After investigation, the German carmaker zero-ed in on the problem related to the cruise control system. However, there was one case where cruise control was not related.

The Bavarian carmaker then determined that when the car is driving at low speeds and there is a high steering angle, the driver’s hand could touch the cruise control button accidently. The BMW iX has a pressure button to activate the cruise control while a physical button controls the speed.

This problem occurs when the cruise control has been used, then the driver disengages it and it is further reactivated accidentally. A scenario that BMW said could happen is users drive the and after a long highway trip, they come back to park. During parking, users could accidently activate the cruise control.

While the acceleration can catch the driver off guard, it can be cancelled by pressing the brake or deactivating the cruise system’s using the cancel button.

Rectification of this recall

BMW says they will update the vehicle’s software free of charge. There are a total of 11,180 BMW iX xDrive50 and iX M60 affected by this issue. The company as well as dealerships will start informing the owners of these affected cars from 28 July 2023 onwards.

The iX is brand’s all-electric flagship SUV. The SUV combines premium mobility with zero-emissions, sporting agility, luxury, and long operating range. The iX has been characterised by its sculptural monolithic design that represents a face that makes mobility easier and more comfortable. Launched in December 2021 in India at a price of INR 1.15 crore (ex-showroom), the iX features various technologies. BMW will sell the iX in India via the CBU route and equip it with its fifth-generation eDrive technology.
