BMW has announced the recall of over 1.5 million vehicles worldwide due to a critical issue with the braking system. This recall affects multiple models produced between June 2022 and August 2024.
Scope of the Recall
The recall impacts a wide range of BMW models, including select BMW X models (excluding X3 and X4), the 5 and 7 Series, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and MINI Cooper and Countryman. Approximately 1.2 million of these vehicles are already in the hands of customers, while around 320,000 remain with BMW or in dealer stock.
The affected vehicles are spread across five major markets: China (370,000), the United States (270,000), Germany (150,000), Korea (70,000), and France (60,000).
Nature of the Fault
The fault lies in the integrated braking system, which was identified during an internal quality check by BMW. The issue can cause the braking system to revert to a “safe mode,” ensuring that the brakes still function but requiring drivers to apply more force. BMW has developed diagnostic software to detect the brake fault before it occurs, alerting drivers to visit a dealership for a free system replacement if necessary.
Financial Impact
Addressing this recall is expected to cost BMW a high three-digit million euro amount for the third quarter. The company has also halted deliveries of the affected vehicles, which will negatively impact sales and earnings targets for the 2024 fiscal year.
Supplier Involvement
German auto supplier Continental AG, which manufactures the integrated brake system for BMW, confirmed the fault and emphasized the availability of diagnostic software to detect the issue early. Continental expects only a small proportion of the brake systems it delivered to require replacement.
Customer Guidance
BMW advises customers to pay attention to any warning signals from their vehicle’s diagnostic system and to visit a dealership promptly if alerted. The company assures that the necessary repairs will be carried out free of charge.
This recall highlights the importance of rigorous quality control and the challenges faced by automakers in ensuring the safety and reliability of their vehicles. BMW’s proactive approach in addressing the issue and its commitment to customer safety are commendable.
