After establishing a strong foothold in India’s long-wheelbase (LWB) sedan market, BMW is now eyeing the SUV segment. The German automaker, known for its luxury vehicles, is exploring the possibility of introducing LWB SUVs in India. Let’s delve into the details.
The Current Scenario
BMW currently offers three LWB sedans in India: the 3 Series, the 7 Series, and the recently launched 5 Series. These sedans cater to rear passenger comfort, emphasizing spaciousness and comfort. However, with SUVs accounting for more than 50% of BMW’s sales in India, the brand recognizes the importance of expanding its SUV lineup.
The Long-Wheelbase Advantage
Jean-Philippe Parain, BMW’s Senior Vice President for sales regions in Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, acknowledges the significance of long wheelbase vehicles in the Indian market. Indian customers desire more room in the second row, especially considering the time spent on the road. Therefore, BMW aims to address this demand by exploring LWB SUV options.
China’s Influence
In China, BMW already offers LWB versions of several SUVs, including the X1, X3, and X5. These models feature extended wheelbases, providing additional legroom and comfort. If BMW brings these LWB SUVs to India, they could become a hit among discerning buyers.
The Competition
Mercedes-Benz, BMW’s primary rival, also sells LWB models in China. These include the C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, and various SUVs. In India, Mercedes-Benz’s only LWB offering is the E-Class sedan, which will soon undergo a full model change. If BMW introduces the LWB X5 in India, it would outperform Mercedes-Benz’s GLE, as the X5’s wheelbase exceeds 3,100 mm compared to the GLE’s 2,995 mm.
The Road Ahead
BMW has already opened pre-bookings for the new-generation 5 Series Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India, with a launch scheduled for July 24, 2024. Assembled at BMW’s Chennai plant, this LWB 5 Series will be the first globally available right-hand drive (RHD) model in the long-wheelbase variant.
