BMW Group celebrated the successful completion of 100 years of its Munich plant. Since 1922, the manufacturing facility has been the heart of BMW, which has worked through every possible hurdle to keep the plant up and running. Located right in the heart of the metropolis, this manufacturing facility is a strong contributor to making Munich a business hub.
How Did It All Start?
The facility first started off with manufacturing engines and motorcycles. Then came the change in 1952, when the plant started making passenger cars. These include some of the most iconic BMWs ever made. The coveted list has names like Isetta, M3, 3 Series, etc. As of today, around 900 BMWs exit this plant every day, with five different models and including all types of drive. A diverse manufacturing portfolio ensures flexibility and also helps in enhancing the skills of the workforce.
Electric Is The New Game
It’s been 100 years now, and things are starting to change. As the world moves towards attaining its sustainability goals, the automotive sector is also shifting. BMW mentioned that its all-electric BMW i4 already accounts for a quarter of the production volume – and rising. From 2023, every second car to leave the plant will be an EV. Thus, a total of 1,00,000 BMW i4s will leave the plant next year.
BMW had its target to achieve 50 per cent electric mobility in its portfolio by 2030. But as it stands, BMW will achieve the feat much earlier. In the last five years, the change has been quite dramatic. From producing only ICE engines to producing hybrids and fully electric i4, the change is pretty evident.
The Plans Ahead
The company recently partnered with the state capital Munich to capitalise on the plant’s unique location in the city centre. This is an attempt to make the complex a global attraction, thus making it more accessible and open to new businesses. There are numerous developments in this aspect that will provide the facility with maximum flexibility, excellent processes and outstanding integration capacities.
