BMW CE 02 export market is strong, why?

BMW introduced its first-ever EV in India last year. The CE 02 electric scooter, while being a misfit for the Indian market, was originally destined for the export markets.

TVS-led production at the Hosur-based plant of the CE 02 has brought good fortune for the European brand. Out of the total scooter export of 5.69 lakh units in the FY2025, the e-scooter export accounted for only a 1% share.

However, the BMW scooter has accounted for 86% of the total electric scooter exports, which is due to its high demand in the European markets and low production cost in India.

BMW managed to export 5,913 units of the CE 02 in the FY2025, which was followed by Ather Energy exporting 805 units and Bajaj Chetak at 125 units.

With that said, the electric scooter market in India is currently expanding as the EV footprint has taken its sweet time to be accepted in the mass market. Now, the ICE scooter customers have begun plunging towards the EVs, which accounts for increasing sales Y-o-Y.

Our verdict

The CE 02 is a practical yet costly scooter for the Indian market. BMW’s main target was the export markets by taking the low production cost advantage from India. This target seems to be achieved now as the export numbers and total sales keep increasing for the brand.
