Bajaj planning more 400cc motorcycles for India

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Bajaj could be planning to launch more 400cc motorcycles in the Indian market. At the launch of the Bajaj NS400Z, the brand hinted that more iterations of the motorcycle could arrive in the near future. The ‘Z’ suffix on the largest NS is in itself a hint that the brand could come up with more products in the NS range.

Bajaj Dominar 400 to be Updated?

However, the brand is not likely to stop there. The company also hinted that the Dominar 400 which is the donor for the NS400Z in terms of the engine and chassis mainframe could be updated soon. One may expect the Bajaj Dominar 400 to come with some cosmetic updates in addition to electronic upgrades such as riding modes and traction control system.

Bajaj Not Worried About Cannibalisation

According to brand, Bajaj only holds a market share of 20-25% in the segment. The company already has the Bajaj Dominar 400, KTM 390 Duke, KTM RC 390, KTM 390 Adventure, Husqvarna Svartpilen 401, Triumph Speed 400, Scrambler 400X, and now the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z. But, Bajaj is unconcerned about cannibalisation as it plans to expand the 400cc segment. In fact, the brand thinks there is more opportunity to grow and have overall gains instead of being cannibalised.

With the addition of more 400cc Bajaj bikes, be it the other iteration of the NS400Z to the new Dominar 400, we think Bajaj will only widen the horizon in the 400cc segment. It is also important to note, that even among its partner brand’s though the engine architecture might be shared, nearly all the bike feature a different purpose and are well differentiated.

A Wider Customer Base

To put things into perspective, just think of the Bajaj Dominar 400 and the Pulsar NS400Z. Both bikes share the engine and chassis mainframe, however, the riding dynamics, styling, its sub-segment are very well defined. For example the Bajaj Dominar 400 is positioned as a sports touring motorcycle and the Pulsar NS400Z as an urban street fighter.

Thanks to this, both bikes attract two different target audiences while also expanding the choice horizon. By offering more choice as well as keeping the price in check through component sharing and economies of scale, the brand is likely to sell more units, rather than worry about cannibalisation, revealed Bajaj during the sideline of the Pulsar NS400Z launch.
