Bajaj to introduce a more affordable Chetak electric scooter
Bajaj Auto is gearing up to launch a new entry-level variant of its popular Chetak electric scooter, further strengthening its position in the rapidly growing EV market. The upcoming model, expected to debut by the end of June 2025, will serve as an upgrade to the Chetak 2903, which has been one of Bajaj’s best-selling electric scooters.
What to expect from the New Chetak variant
The new Chetak variant will build upon the success of the Chetak 35 Series, which debuted in December 2024. Bajaj has hinted at improved range and storage capacity, possibly aligning it with the 35 Series platform.
Currently, the Chetak 2903 features a 21-liter underseat storage, while the 35 Series models offer 35 liters. The upcoming variant may adopt a floorboard-mounted battery, freeing up more space for storage.
Market position and pricing strategy
The 2903 variant is priced at INR 1,09,998 (ex-showroom, Delhi, excluding subsidy), making it one of the most affordable premium electric scooters. Bajaj may retain a similar price point for the new variant to ensure strong value for money.
With the brand now leading India’s EV two-wheeler market, Bajaj aims to expand its portfolio further in FY26, addressing emerging sub-segments.
Challenges and industry impact
Despite Bajaj’s aggressive expansion, the EV industry faces supply chain hurdles, particularly due to China’s export restrictions on rare earth metals. Bajaj has acknowledged that rare earth magnet supplies could run out by July 2025, potentially affecting production timelines.
However, Bajaj remains optimistic, citing cost reductions and government incentives as key factors in maintaining competitive pricing.
