Written by Nizam Shaikh

Audi has revealed the new SQ8 which is a performance-oriented version of the flagship SUV. The German SUV will come with a new mild-hybrid diesel powertrain.  The car will reach European dealerships soon but there is now news of the SQ8 being launched in Indian market anytime soon. The SUV was seen testing in India but it is likely to be part of the global testing programme run by the German brand.

In terms of styling, the SQ8 will feature a new S-specific grille featuring a matt silver bezel, a new body kit, a new rear diffuser with quad oval exhaust tips, revamped air inlets, new aluminium-effect mirrors, larger 22-inch alloy wheels as an option, HD matrix LED headlights, red brake callipers and optional carbon-ceramic brakes.

On the interiors, the Audi SQ8 features a pair of stacked, centrally mounted, touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, the multimedia system also supports Voice control, WiFi hotspot for Amazon Alexa support, automatic air-conditioning, Alcantara leather sports seats with ‘S’ logo, stainless steel pedals, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, and more.

The new Audi SQ8 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 mild-hybrid diesel, producing 429 BHP and 900 Nm of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and an Audi Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The SUV can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 4.8 seconds and can do a top speed of 250 kmph which is electronically limited.

The engine features turbochargers with sequential turbocharging with only a small turbocharger active at low engine speeds and the larger turbo engaging above 2,200 RPM. This helps boost the fuel economy and further limits turbo lag. Further, an electrically powered compressor assists the turbochargers, by adding pressure to the intake,  when starting and accelerating. The electric compressor uses power from the same 48-volt lithium-ion battery which is used to power the belt driven alternator starter with regenerative capabilities claimed to generate 8 kW of power under deceleration.

In terms of hardware, the SQ8 comes with adaptive air suspension and Audi’s Drive Select dynamic handling system as a standard feature with an optional suspension package featuring four-wheel steering, a sport differential and electromechanical active anti-roll bars.

In terms of safety, the SQ8 gets a host of feature including Audi’s manoeuvring assist which helps mitigate low-speeds parking collisions by applying small steering and braking corrections. It also features adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, traffic jam assist and a 360-degree camera.
