The Ministry of Transport has ruled out a new lifesaver decision for all the two-wheeler manufacturers in India. As per the new rule, all new two-wheelers have been mandated to equip the anti-lock braking system from January 1, 2026, irrespective of the engine capacity.

Earlier, the ABS was mandatory only on the two-wheelers ranging the 125cc or above segment. However, the new rule focuses on the mass market 100cc entry-level segment, which sells the most.

This decision has been rolled out after a careful study and prolonged consideration regarding the safety of two-wheeler passengers. As per the government, the majority of the two-wheeler-related accidents are caused by slipping and head injuries. Hence, the anti-lock braking system will help in saving more lives.

Not just the anti-lock braking system, but the MoRTH has also mandated manufacturers to provide two helmets with each new two-wheeler, one for the rider and one for the pillion.

While more details are awaited regarding the new rule, some manufacturers are reported to be unhappy with this decision. Brands like the TVS, Bajaj, and Hero sell the majority of their products under the 125cc segment.

Moreover, the entry-level 100cc segment is a price-sensitive market, where the addition of two helmets and ABS will affect the costs big time. This could potentially damage the profits and market positioning of the products.

Our verdict

We believe that the new anti-lock braking system mandatory rule will improve road safety in India exponentially. However, it will lead to a substantial price increase of the entry-level two-wheelers.
