Key highlights

  • Yamaha has filed a design patent for a new FZ model, likely a cost-effective hybrid variant.
  • The bike retains the 149cc Blue Core engine with hybrid tech, but may skip premium features like TFT display.
  • Expected to be priced around INR 1.40 lakh, undercutting the current FZ-S Fi Hybrid by INR 5,000–INR 10,000.

Yamaha Motor India has filed a new design patent for what appears to be a more affordable version of the FZ-S Fi Hybrid. The move suggests that Yamaha is looking to expand its hybrid motorcycle lineup by offering a budget-friendly alternative to its current flagship 150cc hybrid.

The patent reveals subtle design changes and a simplified feature set, indicating a cost-cutting strategy without compromising the core hybrid powertrain.

Design: Familiar yet simplified

The patented model retains the muscular stance of the FZ series, but with toned-down styling. Key visual cues include:

  • Turn indicators integrated into the fuel tank area
  • Simplified tank shrouds and minimal body graphics
  • Single-piece seat and basic alloy wheels

Unlike the FZ-S Fi Hybrid, this version may skip the TFT instrument cluster, painted alloys, and connected features like turn-by-turn navigation.

Powertrain: Hybrid tech eemains intact

The new model is expected to use the same 149cc Blue Core engine paired with Yamaha’s Smart Motor Generator (SMG). This setup enables:

  • Battery-assisted acceleration
  • Start/stop system for better fuel efficiency
  • Quieter engine starts

Power output should remain at 12.4 PS and 13.3 Nm, with a 5-speed gearbox and single-channel ABS as standard.

Expected pricing and positioning

The current FZ-S Fi Hybrid is priced at INR 1.45 lakh (ex-showroom). The new model—likely to be called the FZ Fi Hybrid—could be priced around INR 1.40 lakh, making it more accessible to budget-conscious buyers2.

This variant will sit below the FZ-S Fi Hybrid and compete with the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, Bajaj Pulsar N160, and Hero Xtreme 160R.
