The maxi-scooter segment is quite new to the Indian market, presently, there are only two scooters that compete in this space, the Suzuki Burgman Street and the Aprilia SXR 160, the latter of which will be launched in the Indian market soon. While Aprilia has commenced bookings and production on the SXR 160, Suzuki has already upgraded the Burgman Street with a new BS6 compliant engine, new colours and a new instruments cluster with smartphone connectivity. Today we put the maxi-scooters head to head in a technical specification comparison.
Engine:
The Aprilia SXR 160 is powered by a BS6 emission-compliant 160.03cc single-cylinder air-fan-cooled 3-valve SOHC motor with electronic fuel injection and Aprilia clean emission engine technology, producing 11 PS of power and 11.6 Nm of torque matched to a CVT automatic transmission. The Suzuki Burgman Street is powered by a BS6 emission-compliant 124cc, single-cylinder 4 stroke air-fan cooled all-aluminium engine with fuel-injection technology that produces 8.7 PS of power and 10 Nm of torque matched to an automatic gearbox.
Dimensions & Weight:
The Aprilia SXR 160 measures 1,960mm in length, 803mm in width and 1,353mm in height and features large dual-geometry 5-spokes 12-inch alloy wheels on the front and rear shod in 120/70 tubeless tyres, a 7-litre fuel tank capacity but the kerb weight of the scooter is unknown at the moment. The Suzuki Burgman Street, on the other hand, measures 1,880 mm in length, 715mm in width, 1,140mm in height, comes with 12-inch front and 10-inch rear alloy wheels shod in 90/90 front and 100/90 rear tubeless tyres, a 5.5-litre fuel tank capacity and 110 kg of weight at the kerb.
Chassis, Suspension and Brakes:
The Aprilia SXR 160 features thick construction chassis with Link-Spring mechanism between the engine and the frame and rides on 30mm diameter telescopic front fork suspension, an adjustable monoshock on the rear, 220 mm ventilated front disc brake and 140mm rear drum brake equipped with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). The Suzuki Burgman Street features a conventional underbone chassis that rides on telescopic front fork suspension, coil spring assisted rear suspension, hydraulic disc brake on the front and a mechanical brake on the rear equipped with Combined Braking System.

The Aprilia SXR 160 comes with features such as 3 coat HD pain finish, Aprilia signature styling, geometric contours on the body, triple LED headlamp cluster, LED combination taillamps, LED daytime running lights, integrated turn indicators, fully digital 210-cm sq. instruments cluster, with mobile connectivity option, front split glove box with USB charging option. The Suzuki Burgman Street features a large front apron, a wraparound rear end, wide LED headlamps, body-mounted turn indicators, combination LED taillamps, front glove box with mobile charging option and a new Bluetooth enabled fully-digital instruments cluster with turn-by-turn navigation, estimated time of arrival alerts, call & SMS alert display, missed call alert & caller identification, WhatsApp alert, over-speed warning and phone battery level display.
Price:
While Piaggio has only commenced booking of the Aprilia SXR 160 in the Indian market at the price of INR 5,000 the price of the maxi-scooter is expected to be revealed at the time of its market launch in January 2021. The price is expected to be in the range of INR 1.25 lakh ex-showroom. The Suzuki Burgman Street on the other hand is priced starting at INR 84,786 ex-showroom, Delhi.
