Maruti Suzuki will name the YRA hatchback as Baleno?
Written by Parichay Malvankar

The upcoming Maruti Suzuki YRA hatchback has been spied multiple times by now. The big news which comes in however is that the car could be named as the Baleno.

The Baleno has been a successful brand for Suzuki internationally, but quite a dud here in India. We cannot be sure that the international nomenclature is carried forward to all the markets, since the companies do rebrand products according to the local requirements. But if it is dubbed as the Baleno, in India, it will have to carry a lot of baggage, which isn’t very positive.

Exteriors:

  • Noticeably different from all Maruti products currently on sale, fresh design
  • Honeycomb mesh front grille extending towards the headlamps
  • Headlamps look slightly similar to those on the Swift, but have their share of differences
  • Round fog lamps in a plastic housing
  • Regular, horizontal air dams
  • Turn indicator mounted on power folding ORVM
  • Side body moulding
  • Chrome door handles
  • Gloss black B & C pillar
  • Noticeable rear quarter glass
  • 16″ rim size
  • Rear wash and wipe
  • Spoiler on the rear windscreen
  • Small tail lamp unit, doesn’t look like an LED unit
  • Reflectors on the rear bumper
  • Much bigger boot space than the Swift
  • Flat dashboard top
  • Big infotainment screen in the centre
  • Centre console in silver shade
  • Automatic climate control
  • Blue and white backlit instrument cluster
  • MID in the instrument cluster

What’s inside:

  • Steering wheel with audio and telephone controls, probably cruise control as well
  • Silver centre console
  • Automatic climate control
  • Dual din stereo head unit
  • Vertical AC vents in the centre
  • Engine start / stop button
  • 2-pot instrument cluster
  • MID in the instrument cluster
  • Leather wrapped, much better looking gear knob
  • Automatic gear stick suggests a petrol automatic variant
  • All-black interiors
  • Black and grey seat upholstery
  • Driver armrest with storage
  • Storage bin ahead of the gear stick
  • 5 adjustable neck restraints
  • No rear seat centre armrest
  • Rear defogger
  • Reverse parking camera

The YRA will slot in above the Swift and below the Ciaz. Primary target for the YRA will be the Hyundai Elite i20 and the upcoming Honda Jazz.

Powering the hatchback will be a 1.2L petrol and a 1.3L diesel motor. A 1.4L petrol motor is a possibility. Reports also suggest that the car could weigh 90 kg lesser than the Swift. That would be ridiculously light as the Swift itself is a very light hatchback. Suspension setup and driving dynamics are also expected to focus more on comfort.

The YRA should be launched by of before the festive season next year.

Pricing is expected to be in the range of Rs. 5.5 – 8.5 lakh
