One Budget, Two Choices: Car or Motorcycle?

One Budget, Two Choices: Car or Motorcycle?
Written by Tejen Dhankhar

Think of a situation when you have got 10 lakh plus of inside your pockets, but you are confused between buying a good motorcycle or an average daily car. The most common thing where minds of most of us are stuck up is that motorcycles are easy to maintain and own than a car. Is it true?

To check this up, i took an equal budget for both and researched a lot before writing.

Take an example where you have got 10 lakh budget. In one case you buy a Honda City for yourself. A petrol car with a 1.5L engine with 118 PS of power and a very good 18 kmpl of efficiency figures. On the other hand you buy yourself a very trusted city howler, a Kawasaki Z800 with a 800cc, in-line, 4-cylinder petrol engine producing a mighty 113 PS or power, something to amaze and please you every time you get on the saddle. The Z800 is a bit cheaper than the Honda City to buy.

Now, if you start calculating the financial stats, the amount of fuel you end up using in both is most of the time similar. If you drive 1,000 kms with both of them (including the city and highway runs) assuming a fuel efficiency of 15 kmpl overall, your car consumes a petrol of 4,200 INR while assuming a similar efficiency (a little less at times when ridden hard) the bike would end up costing your fuel bills around 4,500 INR.

The tyres of Z800 are super sticky & they end up at around 10-15 thousand kilometers max needing a replacement cost of around 20,000 INR. On the other hand Honda City would end up it’s tyres around 60,000 kms which would be replaced at a maximum cost for 30,000 INR max, thus saving you a lot of money in long run.

Z800 needs a servicing at every 5,000 kms that would cost you minimum of 6,000 – 7,000 INR while a Honda City needs a servicing at 15,000 kms that would cost you around similar money or a little more.

In the long run, the extra investment you make on a car is recovered considering the faster consumables on a superbike.

Also, car provides you comfort, safety, protection from outside environment and space to carry more people at similar speeds.

But then, it’s a matter of choice…
