Skoda Auto is set to begin production of its new compact SUV, the Kylaq, in October 2024. This move marks Skoda’s foray into the highly competitive sub-4 meter SUV segment which is ruled by the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and the Kia Sonet.
Production Plans and Market Strategy
The Kylaq will be manufactured at Skoda’s Chakan plant, which also produces the Kushaq and Slavia models. The company has ambitious plans, targeting an annual production volume of 50,000 to 70,000 units. This translates to a monthly output of approximately 4,000 to 5,800 units. Initially, the Kylaq will cater to the domestic market, but Skoda has plans to export the model to international markets, leveraging economies of scale to keep costs competitive.
Design and Features
The Kylaq will be built on the MQB A0-IN platform, shared with other models like the Kushaq and Slavia. This platform is known for its robust build quality and flexibility, allowing Skoda to offer a compact SUV with a “big car” feel. The exterior design will feature Skoda’s signature SUV styling, including split headlamps and a wide grille with vertical slats. The interior is expected to be spacious and well-equipped, with features such as a 360-degree camera and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite likely to be included from launch.
Engine and Performance
Under the hood, the Kylaq will be powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, delivering 115 horsepower and 178 Nm of torque. Customers will have the option of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine setup is designed to offer a balance of performance and fuel efficiency, catering to the needs of urban drivers and long-distance travelers alike.
Competitive Landscape
The Kylaq will enter a crowded market segment, competing with established models like the Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet. Skoda aims to differentiate the Kylaq through its premium build quality, advanced features, and competitive pricing. The company is expected to leverage the heavily localized MQB A0-IN platform to keep costs down and offer the Kylaq at an attractive price point.
