The 5-door SUV competes directly with the Tata Safari in the Indian market and offers a number of comfort and convenience features including Level2 ADAS. But you also get 4X4 drivetrain including smart off-road features such as Intelliturn Assist and Crawlsmart to get you out of tricky situations when off the road. The Mahindra Thar Roxx comes with a starting price of just INR 12.99 lakh ex-showroom. This price is for the petrol manual variant in the rear wheel drive avatar. However, at just INR 13.99 lakh you can also buy the diesel manual RWD variant of the Thar Roxx. On the other hand, the Tata Safari comes with a starting price of INR 15.49 lakh ex-showroom. However, the brand only offers the Safari with a diesel engine option and there are no petrol variants on offer. But, where the Thar Roxx comes with only 5 seats, the Safari offers 7-seats and those two extra seats could make a difference in your buying decision.

Mahindra Thar Roxx Vs. Tata Safari – Engine Specifications

The Mahindra Thar Roxx comes with a 2.0-litre TGDi direct injection turbo-petrol engine that comes in 3 tunes. The 6-speed manual transmission option comes with either a 152 PS / 330 Nm engine or a 168 PS 330 Nm option. The 6-speed torque converter automatic delivers 177 PS of power and 380 Nm of torque. The diesel option comes with a 2.2-litre common rail turbocharged diesel motor which also comes in 2 states of tunes. A 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic come with a 152 PS / 330 Nm motor and there is another 6-speed automatic that comes with 175 PS of power and 370 Nm of torque. While the petrol only comes with rear wheel drive, the diesel engine gets both rear wheel drive and 4×4 drivetrain options.

On the other hand, the Tata Safari comes with only one engine option and that is the FCA derived 2.0-litre Kryotec turbo charged diesel. The engine produces 170 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Mahindra Thar Roxx Vs. Tata Safari – Suspension

The Mahindra Thar Roxx comes with an advanced suspension system which includes a double wishbone front suspension with coil springs. The front suspension also gets features such as an FDD (Frequency dependent damping) as well as MTV-CL ( Multi tuning valve- Concentric land) dampers. On the rear the SUV gets Rigid Axle Coil Spring with WATT’s Linkage along with FDD (Frequency dependent damping). But the rear also features a HRS (Hydraulic Rebound Stopper) and MTV-CL ( Multi tuning valve- Concentric land) dampers offering comfort to the rear passengers as well as off-road capability. The Tata Safari on the other hand comes with a independent, lower wishbone, McPherson Strut with Coil Spring and an Anti-Roll Bar on the front and semi independent Twist Blade suspension with Panhard rod and coil springs on the rear.

In terms of size, the Thar Roxx measures 4428 mm in length, 1870 mm in width and 1923 mm in height. The Thar Roxx also gets a wheelbase of 2850 mm. On the other hand, the Tata Safari comes with 4668 mm in length 1922 mm in width and 1795 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2741 mm.
