The Fastag rules were changed recently and the new changes have been introduced in a phased manner. Earlier this year, all duplicate Fastags were deactivated by banks. This meant that one car can have only one Fastag assigned to it. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has now issued new guidelines which came into effect starting August 1.
What is the new guideline?
As per the new guideline, all Fastags that were issued 3-5 years ago will need to undergo a KYC update. Meaning if your Fastag was issued between 2019 to 2021, you will need to get the KYC updated with the issuing bank. Fastags which are older than five years will have to be discarded. Users will have to get them replaced with new ones.
NPCI has also mandated that all Fastags are to be linked to the vehicle number and the chassis number. In case of new vehicles, the registration number should be updated within 90 days of purchase.
The new rules also suggest that users must upload clear pictures of the vehicle’s front and side when registering the Fastag. The database should also include accurate information of the vehicles and a mobile number that will be assigned to the Fastag.
All these updates must be conducted before October 31st of this year.
What should you do?
- Get a new Fastag if your Fastag is older than five years
- Update KYC with the issuing bank if the Fastag was issued between 3-5 years
- For new car purchases, ensure that the registration number is updated to the Fastag portal within 90 days of purchase of the vehicle
- For all users, upload clear pictures of the vehicle – front and side, add a mobile number and ensure all the details like registration number, chassis number are accurate
