There has been a lot of speculation lately about Ford making a comeback in India. The upcoming Ford Everest and the Ranger Pick-up have been spotted in India several times. These sightings confirmed that Ford is indeed making a comeback in India. However, is it a full-fledged come back or will Ford give us only a few selected products. Read on to find out.
No Mass Market Ford Cars?
A source has revealed that Ford has closed the chapter for mass market ICE (internal combustion engine) for India. The products coming to India will be based on Ford’s T6 platform with diesel engines. This means that the Figo and EcoSport will not be coming to India again. The T6 platform includes the Ford Everest and the Ranger Pick-up that Ford in already evaluating for the Indian market. For the time being these will be the only to ICE products that Ford will sell in India.
What About EVs?
At the time of their exit, Ford had promised that they will be bringing the Mustang Mach-E to India by 2025. While we are still a year away, Ford has not denied the coming of the Mustang based EV. We probably will get the Mustang Mach-E before the end of next year. However, this will be a CBU (completely built-up unit) and will not be manufactured here. There is a slim chance that Ford will bring other affordable EVs in future which will be produced at their Chennai plant.
Comeback Guaranteed?
Ford is still in the process of evaluating if the Everest and the Ranger will be produced in India. It will be a heavy investment to keep the factory running for just two products. The decision of a building a 100% operational manufacturing plant lies in Ford’s EV strategy for India. However, the Everest and Ranger will most likely see a launch in early 2025. These units will either be CBUs or will come as CKD kits and will assembled at the Channai plant.
