The European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) has released crash test ratings for some cars. Today we will be looking at the 2022 Land Rover Discovery Sport. The popular SUV scored 32.2 points or 84% in the adult test and 24 points or 100 % in the child occupant tests.
2022 Land Rover Discovery Sport Adult Occupant Protection Result
In the front impact tests, dummy readings for the rear passenger’s chest indicated as marginal while other areas were well or adequately protected.
Dummy reading for the knees and femurs of both the front occupants indicated good protection. Land Rover also showed that similar protection would be offered to occupants of different sizes and those sitting in different positions. Further, the bodyshell remained stable and was capable of further loading.
In the side impact as well as the side pole tests, all critical areas were well protected. However, the seat-mounted side airbag failed to deploy correctly and got trapped in the interior trim. Due to this, the chest protection was rated as marginal. Control of the excursion – that is the extent to which a body is thrown to the other side when hit from the opposite side – was adequate. That said, the 2022 Land Rover Discovery Sport doesn’t have any counter measures to mitigate such kinds of injuries.
That said, the car being heavy, revealed that in the deformable barrier test, the Discovery Sport would be an aggressive impact partner. This made the SUV lose some points. The SUV also gets an ecall system that alerts the authorities to a crash. Further, the car comes with a post crash braking that applies brakes to prevent secondary collisions.
2022 Land Rover Discovery Sport Child Occupant Protection Result
The front passenger airbag can be disabled when a rear facing child seat is installed in the front seat. As clear information in this regard is offered to the driver, the system was rewarded. In the front offset and the side barrier tests, all critical areas of the dummy were rated as good. The car scored maximum points in this test.
The 3-year old child seat was installed facing forward with ISOFIX and top tether. It prevented excessive forward movement during the forward impact and showed good protection to the head and marginal protection for the chest. The 18-month dummy too was installed with forward seats. That said, the child seat in the optional third-row seat was unstable.
2022 Land Rover Discovery Sport Vulnerable Road Users Result
In the pedestrian impact test, the head protection was good or adequate even in the stiff windshield pillar or base of the windscreen. The car comes with a pedestrian airbag. The system worked robustly. The bumper offered good protection to the pedestrian’s legs while the protection to the pelvis was rated as poor. AEB system of the Discovery Sport responded well to vulnerable users. It worked well with cyclists as well and avoided collisions in most cases.
2022 Land Rover Discovery Sport Safety Assists
The autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system of the SUV worked as described. It performed adequately when tested against other vehicles. A seatbelt reminder is also fitted as standard for both the front and rear occupants as well as those in the third-row seats. The lane assist system also works to get the car back into the center of the lane and in certain critical cases intervenes as well. The speed assistance system uses a camera and digital mapping to identify the local speed limit. This information is conveyed to the driver.
