Written by Kanad Kalasur

Toyota has taken the wraps off the fifth-generation Prius. The car will be offered with a choice of three powertrain options – a plug-in hybrid and two full hybrids. While the plug-in option will be launched in Europe, the two hybrids will be available for other markets like North America and Japan.

Design of the Toyota Prius

The Prius gets a fresh new design which is modern yet carries forward the Prius-specific design elements from the previous cars. It now has a coupe-like profile. Compared to the outgoing car, it now sits lower, is wider and gets a longer wheelbase. That said, the overall length has been reduced.

The front gets C-shaped headlamps that merge into the grille. It has a trapezoidal airdam with silver accents. The front windshield merges into the roof which consists of glass element as well. The tailgate also gets a large glass area give the appearance of a continuous glass from the windshield to the tailgate window.

At the back, the car gets a full-width LED light bar and some black applique on the bumper.

Powertrain options of the Toyota Prius

For the European market, Toyota will be offering a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with plug-in hybrid option. The combined output is said to be 220 HP. The Prius will get a 13.6 kW battery pack which will offer up to 90 km of all-electric range compared to the 60 km of the outgoing car. Customers can also choose a solar panel roof option along with their Prius.

Other markets will be offered with 1.8 and 2.0-litre strong hybrid powertrains. Both the engines will be offered with E-Four all-wheel-drive technology while the power output of the engine will go as high as 194 HP.

Safety kit on the Toyota Prius

Toyota’s latest-generation Toyota Safety Sense will be offered with the Prius. This includes a monocular camera at the front, a rear-facing camera for the Digital Inner Mirror, and an in-vehicle drive recorder. The Prius will also come equipped with the Toyota Teammate system that includes Advanced Park with a remote function, allowing the vehicle to be controlled remotely when pulling into and out of a parking space.

Will Prius be launched in India?

Toyota used to offer the Prius in the Indian market a while back. But due to high pricing, it never flew off the shelves. Hence, it is not likely that the car would be launched in India. Additionally, Toyota is focusing on strong hybrid models for the Indian markets. Currently, the Japanese carmaker sells the Camry and Urban Cruiser Hyryder strong hybrids in the market. These will be complemented by the upcoming Innova Hycross later this month.
