Mahindra will not launch sedans or mini-SUV

Mahindra and Mahindra have decided not to launch sedan cars or mini-SUVs for the Indian market. According to a media report, the automotive giant will focus on making only purebred SUVs such as the Bolero, XUV300, Thar, Scorpio and the XUV500. The brand will not be launching any sedan cars or small SUVs, smaller than the XUV300 in the near future. Apart from mini-SUVs and sedans, Mahindra will not launch any hatchbacks as well.

Mahindra’s Plan For An Electric Future

Mahindra will also focus on fully electric SUVs under the Italian subsidiary Pininfarina. Pininfarina is currently gearing up to launch the Batista electric supercar but the brand will only make around 125 examples of the exclusive 100% electric model. But Mahindra will be learning from the technology from the Batista and apply it to a new line of electric SUVs which will make a debut in the Indian market. The new electric SUVs will create a new segment called S-LUV or Sustainable Luxury Utility Vehicle and is likely to cost around the INR 40 lakh mark. The S-LUV segment is likely to arrive in 2022.

Mahindra’s Upcoming SUVs In India

Mahindra is currently testing the next-generation Scorpio and the next-generation XUV500 in India. The brand also confirmed that the XUV500 will launch in June-July this year followed by the Scorpio close to the 2021 festive season. The brand is also overwhelmed with more than 50,000 bookings on the all-new Mahindra Thar and is ramping up production to meet the demands. The lifestyle SUV has accumulated so many booking that the waiting period is close to 10 months in certain markets.

Mahindra Sales Report

Recently, Mahindra announced that the company recorded a total sales of 40,403 vehicles in the passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and exports in the month of March 2021. The figure was at 6,679 units in March 2020. In the passenger vehicle segment alone Mahindra sold 16,700 units including utility vehicles, cars and vans. Among the top six market leaders, Mahindra is now in the number four spot with a 5.8% market share.
