250cc – 300cc Aprilia motorcycles being planned for India

Written by Parichay Malvankar

We’ve heard rumours for way too long that Piaggio is considering to enter the motorcycle segment with Aprilia products. The brand had already showased the 150cc RS & Tuono models at the Auto Expo, but nothing has materialized yet. Now, the latest set of reports claim that Piaggio might be considering to introduce 250cc – 300cc models in India. The premium motorcycle segment in the 200cc – 500cc class has been noticing significant growth, and the Italian brand might decide to enter this segment. While Royal Enfield dominates this space, Piaggio does not necessarily have any Aprilia product as a direct rival. But, Moto Guzzi does have modern classic motorcycles which could get smaller capacity engines.

Diego Graffi, CEO and MD Piaggio vehicles private limited – Pune (India) has revealed that the brand is keen on entering the middle-weight segment. However, it is to be noted that the premium high capacity motorcycles on sale in the Motoplex stores have not really been fast moving. So cheaper models could help build the brand and also generate more footfall in showrooms.

At the moment, Piaggio retails the Vespa range of premium scooters alongside the sporty Aprilia SR range.

The success of this project would rely on appropriate pricing along with products with the right set of features in a category which has mass market acceptance. Time will tell which product Piaggio will introduce in the motorcycle segment, and if it would be under the Aprilia brand or Moto Guzzi.
