The recently spotted Carens test mule appears to be a facelift model of the current car. However, online reports recently confirmed that Kia is developing a premium iteration of Carens which will be sold alongside the standard model.

This new model will compete with the Maruti Suzuki XL6 in India upon its launch. Meanwhile, the company will also continue selling the standard Carens model for cab operators and budget-friendly buyers.

While not much is known about this upcoming luxury model of Carens, we can safely assume it will get a new design and an updated cabin similar to how the XL6 differs from Ertiga.

A few exterior details visible through the covered panels showcase that it will get chiselled body panels and angular LED lights similar to the newly launched Syros B-SUV.

Moreover, on the inside, we expect a new dashboard with a triple-screen display like the Syros will be installed. Kia will also add some segment-first features to it, possibly including the electrically adjustable rear seats with a ventilation option.

Powering the new MPV model will be the current array of engine options from the Carens. These will include a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with manual and automatic gearbox options.

Online reports also hint that it will not get the diesel powertrain, as Kia intends to keep it reserved for Carens. Additionally, Kia will use a different suffix for naming this new model.

As far as the launch details are concerned, we are expecting Kia to debut the new premium MPV in India later this year. Pricing will be higher than the Carens, with the top-range model crossing the Rs 25 lakh mark possibly.

Our verdict

The new premium MPV from Kia can become a popular choice among chauffeur-driven customers preferring luxury and comfort. Moreover, Kia is also working on an electric version of this MPV, which will use the same battery and electric motor as the Hyundai Creta Electric.
