2023 Carens, Seltos & Creta could get a 160 PS turbo-petrol engine

Siblings Hyundai and Kia have been amongst the top sellers in their segments – especially the SUV segment. Products like the Seltos / Creta, Sonet / Venue and Alcazar / Carens sell in a good amount every month. The Seltos and Creta command a 63 percent market share in the SUV segment. Just last month, that is in November 2022, both of them sold over 21,000 units.

New engine for the Creta, Seltos and Carens

We know that the new real driving emissions (RDE) are coming up soon in 2023. These norms are more stricter than the current BS6 norms. It is reported that the existing 1.4-litre turbo petrol unit serving duty in these cars won’t pass the RDE norms.

Hence, a new engine is reportedly in the works that will replace this 1.4-litre unit. While full details are not yet known, a 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit will replace this engine. It is critical for Hyundai / Kia to ensure that there is a good engine on offer as the turbo petrol units pack quite a punch.

Test mules of Creta with emissions testing equipment

Recently, a test mule of Creta was spotted with what appears to be emission testing equipment. First it was speculated that it could be a new CNG option for the SUV, but now it seems possible that Hyundai is testing out the upcoming 1.5-litre turbo unit.

This 1.5-litre engine is already offered on other Hyundai / Kia vehicles in the global markets. In terms of specifications, the engine is likely to develop 160 PS of power and 260 Nm of peak torque. The engine will be paired with a dual clutch transmission as well as a manual transmission.  This engine is slightly more powerful than the 1.4-litre unit which makes 140 PS and 242 Nm. At present, the 1.4-units is offered with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Hyundai doesn’t offer the manual gearbox box on the Creta but Kia give this choice on this both the Seltos and the Carens.
