2022 Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder revealed for India, Hyundai Creta rival

Written by Rohit Tonapi

Toyota has unveiled the much anticipated 2022 Urban Cruiser HyRyder in India. Maruti Suzuki and Toyota jointly developed the new hybrid SUV. With the new entrant, both the brands aim to take on the mid-size SUV segment in India. The all-new Urban Cruiser HyRyder is the company’s first mass-market hybrid in the country. Hence, it is an important product for Toyota as well for Maruti Suzuki.

Toyota also announced that it will localise its E-Drive hybrid technology in India. The same hybrid technology will make its way into this new SUV from the brand. The brand invested INR 4,800 crore for electrified powertrain manufacturing at its Bidadi plant in Karnataka. The local manufacturing of this will cater not only to the domestic market but also to the export markets.

The SUV will arrive at dealerships by next month. That is also when Toyota will reveal the prices. However, the bookings are now officially open. Interested customers can book the Urban Cruiser HyRyder by visiting their nearest Toyota dealership or online using the official website. The booking amount is INR 25,000.

2022 Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder – Exterior Highlights

We did get glimpses of the Urban Cruiser HyRyder from the teasers. However, this is the first time we get to see it in its full glory. The 2022 Urban Cruiser HyRyder sports distinct styling, which is in line with its global SUV lineup. At the front, you see the twin LED DRLs split by a chrome strip. The chrome strip extends to the grille with the Toyota logo in the middle. Toyota calls this the Crystal Acrylic Grille. Below the grille, it gets a wide trapezoidal grille. Flanking the grille, you see the headlight housings.

On the sides, you see clean lines and an upright stance. It also gets squared-off wheel arches similar to the Toyota RAV4 SUV. The Urban Cruiser HyRyder also rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with a split-spoke design. At the rear of the SUV, you get a thick chrome trim below the rear windscreen. Flanking the chrome trim are the slim C-shaped LED taillights. The reverse light, reflectors and the side turn indicators are housed in a different vertical housing on the bumper. The silver faux skid plate on the lower bumper finishes the rear look.

2022 Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder – Interior Highlights

The interiors of the Urban Cruiser HyRyder will feature dual-tone upholstery. The dashboard will also feature soft-touch panels with contrasting premium stitching. There will be ambient lighting present as well. However, we are not sure if the ambient lighting will have different colour options available.

Another interior highlight is the panoramic sunroof. As for the infotainment system, it will feature a 9-inch SMARTPLAYCAST system. The infotainment screen also doubles up as the display for the 360-degree surround camera. The Urban Cruiser HyRyder will also feature a Head-Up Display, wireless charger and ventilated seats. The instrument cluster of the SUV is also a fully-digital unit.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder will also get a host of connected car features via Toyota iConnect. Toyota says it will feature over 55 connected features such as Remote Ignition On/Off, Remote AC On/Off and many more.

2022 Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder – Powertrain

The Urban Cruiser HyRyder will use a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a mild and strong hybrid powertrain. Furthermore, it will also be the first model in its segment to offer a strong hybrid powertrain. There will also be an AWD drivetrain available on some variants.

The mild-hybrid system will use Maruti Suzuki’s K15C 1.5-litre petrol engine with an integrated starter generator (ISG). This is the same motor we see on the Ertiga, XL6 and the recently introduced Brezza. The motor makes 103 HP and 137 Nm of torque. The transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

On the other hand, the strong-hybrid system in the Urban Cruiser HyRyder will use Toyota’s 1.5-litre TNGA powertrain. The engine also uses an Atkinson cycle for better efficiency. It produces 92 HP of power and 122 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with an electric motor. The electric motor produces 79 HP of power and 141 Nm of torque. It produces 115 HP of combined power. The strong-hybrid engine will come with a CVT transmission.

The strong-hybrid system is paired with a 177.6 lithium-ion battery. Thus, the SUV will be able to travel up to 25 km on electric power alone. Toyota claims it can cover 40 per cent of the total distance and 60 per cent time in pure electric mode in our conditions. The Urban Cruiser HyRyder Hybrid will return around 24 to 25 kmpl. This will make it the best-in-class fuel efficiency.
