2021 Toyota Fortuner could produce monstrous 500+ Nm torque

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Toyota is gearing up to launch the new Fortuner facelift in the Indian market. The SUV has already made its debut in Thailand and it was recently seen testing in India. But new reports suggest that the new facelift model will also come with an updated engine that produces more than 500 Nm of torque. The Fortuner with the more potent engine is likely to arrive in the first half of 2021 in the Indian market.

Currently, the Toyota Fortuner in India is powered by a BS6 emissions-compliant 2.7-litre in-line four-cylinder 16-valve dual VVTi DOHC petrol engine that produces 166 PS of power and 245 Nm of torque matched to a 5-speed manual gearbox and an optional 6-speed automatic unit with sequential shift. The other option is a 2.8-litre in-line four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC diesel engine with a variable nozzle turbocharger and intercooler that makes 177 PS of power and 450 Nm of torque matched to a 6-speed manual transmission with iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) or a 6-speed automatic gearbox with sequential shift.

The high torque engine is likely to be employed on the Diesel iteration. As of now, details on how the diesel motor produces a large number of torques is not yet available. But it is likely to be done by changing the geometry of the turbocharger. The displacement on the engine is likely to remain the same. However, the Toyota Fortuner in the international market is also sold with a 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre inline four-cylinder diesel engine which is said to have been upgraded to produce a maximum power output of 204 PS of power and 500 Nm of peak torque. The brand has recently upgraded the current powertrain line-up to BS6 emission standards and chances of bringing another powertrain to the Indian market are quite slim.

The facelift model, however, will come with redesigned exteriors and upgraded interiors. The SUV is likely to come with a new grille new LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels, new design sleek LED tail lamps and a few add-ons on the interiors.
