MG Motor India launched India’s first Level1 Autonomous SUV with a plethora of features in 7-seat and 6-seat layouts at the starting price of INR 28.98 lakh ex-showroom, India. The Gloster SUV is available in four trim variants with the top-spec trim priced at INR 35.38 lakh ex-showroom. While the MG Gloster comes with benchmark-setting features in its segment that were only offered on much more expensive SUVs its prime competition is the Toyota Fortuner, the Ford Endeavour and the Mahindra Alturas in the Indian market.
Price:
The MG Gloster as mentioned above comes with a starting price tag of INR 28.98 lakh for the Super trim with 7-seats, INR 30.98 lakh for the Smart trim, INR 33.68 lakh for the Sharp trim with 7-seats, INR 33.98 lakh for the Sharp trim with 6-seats and 35.38 lakh for the top-of-the-line Savvy trim. The Toyota Fortuner starts at INR 28.66 lakh for the 2.7-litre petrol manual with 4×2 driveline and goes upto INR 34.43 lakh for the 2.8-litre diesel automatic for the 4×4 driveline. The Ford Endeavour comes with a starting price of INR 29.99 lakh and goes upto INR 35.10 lakh for the top-trim with 4×4 driveline. The brand only offers a single 2.0-litre diesel powertrain with automatic transmission as standard. The Mahindra Alturas too comes with a single diesel powertrain option but is offered with 4×2 and 4×4 drivelines priced INR 28.73 lakh and 31.73 lakh, respectively.
Dimensions:
The MG Gloster SUV measures 4985mm in length, 1926mm in width, 1867mm in height along with 2950mm of wheelbase. The Gloster offers a 2+3+2, a seven seat layout as well as 2+2+2, six-seat layout with captain seats. The Toyota Fortuner measures 4795 mm in length, 1855 mm in width and 1835 mm in height and comes with a 2745 mm of the wheelbase. The Fortuner comes with a 2+3+2 seven seat layout and not captain seats are offered. The Ford Endeavour measures 4903mm in length, 1869mm in width, 1837mm in height and comes with a 2850 mm wheelbase. The SUV is offered with a 2+3+2 seven-seat layout. The Mahindra Alturas G4 measures 4,850mm in length, 1,960mm in width, 1,845mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,865mm. It is also offered with a 2+3+2 seven seat layout.
Engine:
The MG Gloster SUV is powered by a BS6 emission-compliant 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 163 PS of power and 375 Nm of torque paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission and a with a 4X2 driveline. The second option is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder Twin-Turbocharged diesel motor that makes 218 PS of power and 480 Nm of torque matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission and comes with a 4X4 driveline. The Toyota Fortuner is powered by a BS6 emissions-compliant 2.7-litre in-line four-cylinder 16-valve dual VVTi DOHC petrol engine that produces 166 PS of power and 245 Nm of torque matched to a 5-speed manual gearbox and an optional 6-speed automatic unit with sequential shift. It also comes with a diesel engine which is a 2.8-litre in-line four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC unit with a variable nozzle turbocharger and intercooler that makes 177 PS of power and 450 Nm of torque matched to a 6-speed manual transmission with iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) or a 6-speed automatic gearbox with sequential shift. The Ford Endeavour is powered by a BS6 compliant 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbocharged diesel engine that produces 170 PS of power and 420 Nm of torque coupled to the world’s first 10-speed automatic SelectShift transmission and powering the Alturas G4 is a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 181 ps of power and 420 Nm of torque matched to a Mercedes-Benz 7 Speed Automatic gearbox.
4X4 Drivetrain and Modes:
The Gloster SUV comes with on-demand 4-wheel-drive technology along with drive modes – Rock, Sand, Mud and Snow. The SUV also features a a separate rear differential lock button with Borg Warner Transfer Case and 19-inch alloy wheels to traverse over tough terrain with ease. The Toyota Fortuner also features a 4WD with High [H4] and Low [L4] Range gearbox along with A-TRC (Active Traction Control), DAC (Downhill Assist Control). The Ford Endeavour features a Terrain Management System (TMS) with four preset modes – Normal, Snow/Mud/Grass, Sand and Rock allowing it to crawl out of tough situations with ease. The Mahindra Alturas G4 also features an on-demand 4WD system to traverse over tough terrain.

The MG Gloster SUV features Premium leather layering and soft-touch materials on the dashboard and door panels as standard, the SUV also comes with Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) including Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Parking Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Critical Tyre Pressure Voice Alert on the to-spec version and also features a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display with USB, FM etc. The Toyota Fortuner is offered with features such as a Head-Up Display, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), 360-degree panoramic rearview monitor and soft-touch leather on the dash along with wood-grain embellishments. The Ford Endeavour comes with first-in-class Active Noise Cancellation technology for a silent cabin, a large panoramic sunroof, 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, dual-zone automatic climate control and cloud connected features. The Alturas G4 is offered with dual-tone quilted Nappa leather interiors, soft-touch dashboard, leather finish soft-touch door trims, power-adjustable driver seat, electric sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, ventilated seats, 20.32-cm touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration etc.
