The Mahindra Thar has been spotted testing in its new avatar on several occasions and now it is being speculated that it will come in an automatic gearbox option. The Thar is expected to be launched next year around April 2020.  The new Thar is likely to be based on the next-gen Mahindra Scorpio chassis and the SUV appears to be wider than the outgoing model.

The 2020 Thar is expected to get the 7-slated grille design and the fenders and bumpers are likely to be plastic. The rear design including the tail light design is likely to remain the same, but with the latest bit like LED hopefully. It is expected to have a much larger windscreen and windows, compared to the old one for better visibility.

The interior of the new Mahindra Thar will include an updated dashboard design with cubby holes with a lockable glove box. The new Mahindra Thar will have wider, more ergonomically designed and comfortable front seats with side bolstering and collapsible rear seats. The SUV will also come with an air-conditioner, new and improved instrument cluster with MID, new multi-function steering wheel, new dashboard, new floor console, better roof & more structural rigidity. A new touchscreen infotaiment screen as well? Who knows…

The engine on the new Thar will be a BSVI compliant block from the day of its launch and it is expected to be a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder motor with manual and automatic transmission options. The SUV will be offered in a 4-wheel drive option along with a low range gearbox.

The current Mahindra Thar uses a 2498cc, four-cylinder, CRDe motor producing 105 BHP of power @ 3800 RPM and 247 Nm of torque @ 1800-2000 RPM mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with a BorgWarner transfer case with high and low reduction gears and a manual shift on 4X4 models. The Mahindra Thar also comes with a 2523cc, DI motor producing 63 BHP of power @ 3200 RPM and 195 Nm of torque @ 1500-1800 RPM connected to a 5-speed manual transmission.

The exterior dimensions of the current Thar are as follows:-

  • 1726 mm in Width
  • 1930 mm in Height
  • 2430 mm of Wheelbase
  • 200 mm of Ground clearance
