2020 Mahindra Thar price now starts at INR 11.90 lakh, AX & AX Std variant discontinued?

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Mahindra has updated the brand’s official website and silently removed the entry-level AX line-up which was launched at INR 9.80 lakh ex-showroom. The AX trim consisted of the Standard 6-seater Soft-Top that was priced at INR 9.80 lakh, the 6-seater Soft Top that was priced at INR 10.65 lakh ex-showroom, both with petrol powertrains and 6-seater Soft Top priced at INR 10.85 lakh ex-showroom, in the Diesel powertrain.

The brand has discontinued the above-mentioned models from the official website, which means the entry-level model now starts with the AX Optional trims starting at INR 11.90 lakh ex-showroom hiking the prices by INR 2.10 lakh ex-showroom. This also leads us to believe that the AX trim that was available with the fixed soft top is not likely to be available and the AX Optional will come with a convertible top option. The powertrain and gearbox options remain unchanged.

The entry-level AX trim is offered with both petrol and diesel powertrains but the AX line up is offered only with a Manual Transmission option. The AX trim was also offered with 2+4 side-facing 2nd-row seats and 16-inch rims shod in All-Terrain tyres. While the 16-inch rims wheels continue to be equipped on the AX Optional, the side-facing seat option is not likely to be available on the AX Optional.

In the engine department, the Thar is powered by an all-new mStallion series 2.0-litre Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection (TGDi) four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC petrol engine that makes 150 Bhp of power and 320 Nm on the automatic transmission and 300 Nm of torque on the manual transmission option. The Thar is also offered in a mHawk series 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 130 Bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque. In the AX Optional trim, the Thar is only offered with the 6-speed manual transmission but on the higher LX trims that Thar is also available with the 6-speed automatic gearbox. The Thar is also available with 4-wheel drive and a manual transfer case as standard across all variants.
